The Unexpected Bonus of Boundaries and A Book Giveaway

energy1If you have been following the blog over the last few months, you will know that I had to make a hard decision to let a long time team member go because her working with us just one day a week was preventing me from being able to hand off the work phone during the work week.

I had spent time at the start of 2015 figuring out what drained my energy the most and the work phone was definitely it. Now we are a couple months in to me never having the work phone and it has been the best business decision I have made in awhile. Do not get me wrong; I miss our team member a ton and thankfully we still get to see her at her full time job.

My being able to be fully present with my kids, husband and quite honestly even with myself at the end of the day has given me a ton of energy back. I am not sure even I understood just how draining it was to be constantly tied to that phone every day after our workday was over.

What I did not expect though is how it has enabled me to be more energized and present when I am talking to owners after their pet’s surgery or after I have done a consultation or a recheck. Instead of feeling an energy drain I actually get energized talking to them and it reminds me of how fortunate I am to do what I love every day!

Putting clear boundaries around what I can and cannot do each day has enabled me to enjoy again one of the essential parts of our business: talking on the phone to pet owners and veterinarians.

 

What is draining your energy?

As Tony Schwartz talks about in his great book, The Way We are Working Isn’t Working, you need to focus on managing your energy not your time.

I bet there is something in your life you can need to delegate to someone else. Heck, there are probably a lot of things but let’s just focus on ONE THING you can delegate that drains your energy. Yes, I understand for you control freaks out there this can seem impossible but it is my challenge to you.

Hello,

1st time poster. I usually don’t share my personal (OK, professional) stuff but Rebecca… you made me do it!
I have just started delegating my social media efforts. I can’t comment on any results yet, but it sure feels good to get rid of what I feel is a burden.

Awesome and good for you. Rachel my virtual assistant does most of this for me too! It is not in my personal wheelhouse yet it is so important to all businesses today! Thanks for commenting and so far it is looking pretty good for you to get a book!
